Los Nietos, which is in the east of the municipality of Cartagena on the shore of the Mar Menor, is one of the beach resorts which grew in this part of the Costa Cálida in the early twentieth century, and the atmosphere still retains some of its slightly old-world charm, harking back to the time when the majority of those who came here Los Nietos were from the rest of the Region of Murcia.

Los Nietos began as a very small fishing settlement and was later urbanized to allow more holiday homes by the Mar Menor.It is now a busy community with many visitors, especially in the summer, with some events at other times. Many foreigners, mainly British, live there.

The train service is the eastern terminus of the Cartagena-Los Nietos commuter railway line.
