Rafal is a municipality in the Valencian Community situated in the south of the province of Alicante, in the comarca of Vega Baja del Segura. The origin of the town is found in the kingdom of Al-Andalus (8th-15th centuries) deriving the term RAFAL from the Arabic RÁH (AL) which means “house on the outskirts of a city”.Located around half way between the city of Orihuela and the coastal towns of Guardamar del Segura and Torrevieja. This town is accessed from Alicante via the A-7 to connect with the CV-900 and end at the CV-911. Rafal is entirely surrounded by the municipality of Orihuela. It is a carefree and well urbanized town, with gardens and green spaces. Most houses or gardens of Rafal are decked out with ornamental plants such as geraniums, jasmines, Lilies, roses, begonias, bougainvillea, ferns.
In the urban area, the church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario houses outstanding works of art inside.including three paintings from the school of José de Ribera which were commissioned by the Marquess of Rafal from the court of Carlos III in 1775.The town also has a Town Hall, library and an auditorium.
Various annual fiestas are held. For many the most important of these are the Fiestas Patronales on and around the feast day of the Virgen del Rosario, including a religious procession on October 7 and a more pagan parade the following day. The most iconic event in Rafal during this period is the “Graná” procession on Easter Day itself, when a papier-mâché pomegranate-like structure is suspended from the main archway. At dawn it opens as the figure of the Virgen del Rosario approaches, and thousands of small pieces of coloured paper and flower petals pour out as the Virgin is reunited with her son and the town symbolically commemorates the Resurrection.
In the town there is a large array of shops to suit all and market day is Every Thursday from 8:00 to 15:00.
